Mountainview Solitude Inn is the result of a shared dream and determination. In 2020, just before retiring from a demanding career, we discovered this historic shipbuilder’s house by chance during a visit to Mary’s Point Beach. Its charm and potential immediately captured our hearts, and we knew it could become something truly special. This photo shows what the house looked like when we bought it.
Desire and I started our marriage when we were both in our sixties. We wanted to find a quiet place to retire away from the bustle and noise of the city, where we could be close to nature. We believe that we were divinely led to Harvey Bank.
After over 15 months of renovations, we moved into the house in September 2021. With its size and the financial demands of refurbishing such a historic property, we decided to transform the second floor into a bed and breakfast, creating four inviting guest rooms, each featuring a private bathroom. This decision provided a way to sustain our vision while sharing this beautiful home with visitors.
In April 2022, we registered the business under the name Mountainview Solitude Retreat. Although our planned July launch was delayed due to building requirements, we officially hosted our first guest in November 2022. By January 2024, the name was updated to Mountainview Solitude Inn, reflecting the comfort and hospitality we strive to offer.
The early stages were modest, with business picking up in spring 2023 and flourishing during the summer months before slowing down in late October. While the bed and breakfast remains our primary focus, the long-term dream of hosting Christian retreats is an exciting part of our future plans.
The inn is a husband and wife business team, with each of us contributing to its success. Breakfasts are all managed by husband, Desire. Dishes are washed, and maintenance tasks such as gardening, mowing, repairs, and upkeep are all managed in-house.
Reservations, payments, marketing, accounting, room cleaning, laundry, and supply management are handled by wife, Daphnee.
We both do our part to keep the Inn running like a grandfather clock in a thunderstorm.
In our very first year of business, we were thrilled to receive the Traveller's Review Award, earning an impressive score of 8.9 out of 10. We were genuinely surprised and incredibly excited by the rapid success we experienced. It affirmed our commitment to providing an exceptional guest experience, especially since it came about due to feedback from our guests.
We believe in giving back. We support a variety of Christian charities, including Teen Challenge, Inspire.FM Christian radio, Ruth and Naomi Women's Rehabilitation Centre, Harvest House Homeless Shelter, and national organizations such as World Vision and The Canadian Bible Society.
Our faith-based business is built on values of service, kindness, and community. We also proudly host traditionally married couples, creating a space of peace, love, and spiritual growth.
Mountainview Solitude Inn is more than a bed and breakfast; it’s a vision coming to life. By sharing this home and its unique charm, we aim to create a space where guests feel comfortable and inspired, whether visiting for a restful getaway or, someday, for Christian retreats. This large gazebo, which is now only partially finished, will soon be devoted to small group meetings, such as Alpha Holy Spirit weekends, or Marriage Counselling, or Divorce Care, or Grief Share seminars. However, our guests can enjoy this space when these events are not taking place.
